The UN special envoy to Syria has told the BBC he’s optimistic that talks on resolving the conflict in Syria will go ahead. But Staffan de Mistura warned that the date they’re set to begin – January 25th – may slip. He says Syrians should lead the talks – and outside players like the US and Russia should support that, rather than disagreeing over who can take part. He spoke to our Chief International Correspondent Lyse Doucet in Davos, where he’s attending the world economic forum.

I hold my hand up to the actual white painted wall in front of me. My hand clearly stands out and does not blend in with the white wall. And I'm supposed to be "white", with immediate ancestry from "white" people from the British isles. I try to imagine what it must be like seeing everyone as a distinct "color" and basing my judgements on that; it's nearly impossible. I try to imagine sitting alone in a dim, dirty place on a computer, hating my life, being overweight, having a crap job, few friends, little money, and sitting typing hate for other "races" that are the reason for why life is so bad. It's just a pathetic existence and i can only feel sorry for these people, and hope that at least if they can't change and be happy, they just stay alone until they die and don't cause any harm to any people around them. – via @haystacktv
